Dr. Bradley Carthon
Bradley C. Carthon, MD, PhD, is a nationally recognized physician-scientist, educator and leader dedicated to advancing innovative treatments for genitourinary cancers while improving cancer care, reducing health disparities and serving communities across Georgia.
About me

I am originally from Fort Valley, Georgia. Growing up in rural Georgia and losing my mother to cancer at an early age shaped my commitment to oncology and patient-centered care, inspiring me to pursue a career in medicine.
Â
As a pre-med undergraduate, I chose to attend Hampton University, a historically Black college and university (HBCU). I later returned to Boston to earn my MD and PhD from Harvard University. After completing a fellowship at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, I returned to Georgia to practice at Emory as a cancer doctor and researcher.

Today, I work with the genitourinary oncology team at Winship Cancer Institute to identify novel therapeutic targets and lead clinical trials evaluating innovative treatment combinations for patients with prostate, bladder, kidney, and other genitourinary cancers.
I serve as a professor in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine and section chief of hematology and oncology at Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Midtown. I Â also serve as a community engagement co-chair for the Winship Mobile Prostate Cancer Screening Unit and previously served as chair of the Winship Cancer Institute Health Disparities, Health Literacy and Minority Accrual Committee. Lastly, I am also a member of Winship's Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics Research Program.

Beyond my clinical and research responsibilities, I consider community service an important part of my life's work. I have had the privilege of speaking at schools, churches and community organizations throughout Georgia, and I am proud to have mentored many trainees and to serve as national president emeritus of the Student National Medical Association.

Growing up in Georgia, I became aware at a young age that where you lived, what you looked like or how much money you had could influence the care you received. Those experiences stayed with me. By age 12, I knew I wanted to pursue medicine, becoming the first person in my family to follow that dream.
